A Microsoft Money replacement for your checkbook
Updated November 5, 2026 · Macon Apps
Microsoft stopped selling Money in 2009. A free "Sunset" edition without online services followed, and many people still run it today, but it hasn't been updated since. If what you relied on was Money's account register and the monthly reconcile, Checkbook Register brings that back on Windows 10 and 11.
What Money users tend to miss
- A plain account register with a running balance, not a feed of transactions you can't edit.
- Balancing to the statement with cleared and reconciled marks.
- Your data on your own PC, without creating an online account or handing over bank passwords.
- Paying once. Money was bought in a box; most of today's options are subscriptions.
Checkbook Register was built around exactly those four things.

Moving from Money
- Reconcile one last time in Money so you know the balance is right.
- Create your account in Checkbook Register with that reconciled balance as the opening balance.
- Optionally bring history (Pro): if your version of Money can export an account to a QIF file, import it; or download OFX/QFX files from your bank's website for the months you want. Entries are matched rather than duplicated.
- Keep your .mny file as an archive of earlier years.
Built for comfortable reading
Checkbook Register has a large-text option and a light "paper" theme alongside the dark one, keyboard-friendly entry, and print-friendly output for your records. It runs in its own window, works offline, and stores everything locally. There's nothing to sign in to.
Price
Free to download from the Microsoft Store, and the free edition never expires. Pro is a one-time US$7.99 purchase inside the app. No subscription, no renewal.
On a Mac, Chromebook or phone? The web edition works in your browser; the Store app is for Windows PCs.
Questions
Does Microsoft Money still work on Windows 11?
Many people still run Money Plus Sunset Deluxe on Windows 10 and 11, but it has not been updated since 2010 and has no online services. It is worth keeping a current backup and having a plan for moving off it.
Can I import my Microsoft Money file?
Not the .mny file itself. If your version of Money can export an account to QIF, Checkbook Register Pro can import that file. You can also start fresh from your current bank balance, which takes a minute.
Is Checkbook Register made by Microsoft?
No. Checkbook Register is an independent app by Macon Apps. It is distributed through the Microsoft Store, which also handles the optional Pro purchase.
