How to fill in a check register

  1. Start with your balance. On the first line, write today's balance from online banking or your last statement in the Balance column.
  2. Record every transaction the day it happens: checks, debit card purchases, ATM withdrawals, automatic payments, transfers and deposits. Write the check number, or a code from the list below, in the first column.
  3. Payments and fees go in the minus columns and are subtracted from the balance. Deposits go in the plus column and are added.
  4. Work out the new balance on every line, so you always know what you can spend.
  5. Tick the ✓ column when the transaction appears on your bank statement. Unticked entries are your outstanding items when you balance the checkbook.
  6. At the bottom of a page, write the balance on the "carried forward" line and copy it to the top of the next page.

Paper or electronic?

Paper registers are quick to carry and easy to understand, and plenty of people still prefer them. The common problems are arithmetic: one wrong carry in the balance column throws off every line after it, and finding it at the end of the month is slow. An electronic register keeps the running balance exact, remembers payees and categories, and turns monthly balancing into ticking items off a list. Many people use both: a paper register in the checkbook cover and the app at home.

Questions

How do I save the check register as a PDF?

Choose Print this page, then pick 'Save as PDF' or 'Microsoft Print to PDF' as the printer. The register is laid out for US Letter landscape and also fits A4.

What does the check mark column mean?

Tick it when the entry shows up on your bank statement (it has 'cleared'). Unticked entries are the ones you add or subtract when you balance the checkbook.

What should I write for debit card and ATM transactions?

Leave the number column blank or write DC (debit card) or ATM, describe the merchant or ATM, and record the amount in the payment column like a check.
